Fractional CFO cost in 2026 runs from $3,000 to $18,000 a month, depending on the vendor's published range and how much of the role you buy. That matters to any owner who has outgrown a bookkeeper's reports but cannot justify the full-time CFO salary a search firm will quote.
This article puts the published ranges side by side, each named as that vendor's own figure on the day we read it. Then it sets them against federal pay data for the full-time seat and shows where a retainer stops being the cheaper option.
How much does a fractional CFO cost per month?
A fractional CFO costs $3,000 to $12,000 a month in the ranges Pilot and Eightx publish. Preferred CFO lists $3,000 to $10,000, Zeni $5,000 to $8,000 and Fractionus $8,000 to $18,000, all read on November 4, 2026. The scope of work you buy, not the title, decides where inside those ranges a business lands.
Every one of those pages belongs to a company that sells the service, so each range is a published price, not a market survey. That is why this article names the vendor next to every figure and gives the date the page was read. If you want the roles themselves explained first, our guide to fractional CFO versus full-time CFO covers what each one does.
Fractional CFO cost by vendor: the published ranges
The table holds only what each vendor's own page said on November 4, 2026. Where a page gives both a wide range and a typical band, both are shown.
| Vendor page | Monthly range it publishes | Typical band or note on the page | Page date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pilot (pilot.com) | $3,000 to $12,000 | Average of $5,000 to $8,000 for early- to mid-stage companies | August 18, 2025 |
| Eightx (eightx.co) | $3,000 to $12,000 | $5,000 to $10,000 for most $5 million to $20 million brands on a 15 to 25 hour retainer | March 12, 2026, updated June 20, 2026 |
| Preferred CFO (preferredcfo.com) | $3,000 to $10,000 | Most agreements $5,000 to $7,000 for small and mid-sized companies | June 14, 2025 |
| Zeni (zeni.ai) | $5,000 to $8,000 | About $300 an hour at 15 to 25 hours a month; Zeni's own plans begin at $1,149 a month | December 9, 2020 |
| Fractionus (fractionus.com) | $8,000 to $18,000 | Low end: reporting oversight and cash flow management; high end: fundraising, M&A, multi-entity structures | March 27, 2026 |
Zeni's page is the oldest of the five and the only one that prints its own plan price. The other four describe their figures as market ranges and ask the reader to request a quote. Read the dates as part of the data: a range published in 2020 says less about 2026 than one updated in June.
Two of the pages disagree with themselves, which is worth knowing before you quote them back to a vendor. Pilot calls $3,000 to $12,000 an average in its introduction and $5,000 to $8,000 the industry average in its FAQ. Eightx's callout box at the top of its page gives $4,000 to $8,000 for $5 million to $20 million brands. Its opening paragraph gives $5,000 to $10,000 for the same band.
Fractional CFO hourly rate and pricing by revenue stage
Fractionus notes that most fractional executives work on a monthly retainer, and hourly arrangements exist alongside it. Zeni's guide puts the rate at around $300 an hour and assumes 15 to 25 hours a month for an early-stage company. That comes to $4,500 to $7,500 before rounding. Eightx's 2026 guide gives $150 to $500 an hour and ties the rate to experience. It lists $150 to $250 for 5 to 10 years and $250 to $350 for 10 to 15 years. Fifteen years or more with a specialty runs $350 to $500.
Eightx is also the only page of the five that prices by revenue stage. Its stage table, read November 4, 2026, reads as follows.
| Revenue stage (Eightx) | Monthly range |
|---|---|
| Early stage, under $5 million | $3,000 to $5,000 |
| Growth, $5 million to $30 million | $5,000 to $10,000 |
| Scale, $30 million to $75 million | $10,000 to $15,000 |
| Enterprise, $75 million and up | $15,000 to $20,000 or more |
The same page also prices by business size in prose, and those bands do not line up with its table. It lists $3,000 to $4,500 under $3 million, $5,000 to $8,000 from $3 million to $10 million, and $8,000 to $12,000 from $10 million to $50 million. The stage table is the one quoted here. Project work sits outside the retainer on that page: financial modeling at $10,000 to $25,000 and fundraising support at $5,000 to $20,000. That kind of one-off work is what our finance consulting engagements are scoped for.
Fractional CFO vs full-time CFO cost
The full-time comparison in most vendor posts is a round number with no source behind it. The federal figures are more useful, because anyone can open them and redo the arithmetic.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook puts the median annual wage for financial managers at $166,570 in May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned under $94,310 and the highest 10 percent more than $323,270, according to the same page, read November 4, 2026. The handbook says experienced financial managers may advance to become chief financial officers. So the group is broader than CFOs, and the median works as a floor for the comparison, not as a CFO salary.
Wages are not the whole cost. The BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026, published September 9, 2026, puts private-industry compensation at $46.89 per hour worked. Wages and salaries are $32.82 of that, or 70.0 percent, and benefits are $14.07, or 30.0 percent.
Start with the median wage
$166,570 a year, the BLS May 2025 median for financial managers.
Gross it up for benefits
If wages are 70.0 percent of total compensation, total compensation is $166,570 divided by 0.70, which is $237,957. Call it $238,000 a year.
Turn it into a monthly figure
$237,957 divided by 12 is $19,830 a month, before any recruiting fee, bonus or equity.
Compare the retainer
A $5,000 retainer is $60,000 a year, about 25 percent of the seat. A $12,000 retainer is $144,000, about 61 percent. An $18,000 retainer is $216,000, about 91 percent.
| Monthly fee | Annual cost | Share of a $237,957 full-time seat |
|---|---|---|
| $3,000 | $36,000 | 15 percent |
| $5,000 | $60,000 | 25 percent |
| $8,000 | $96,000 | 40 percent |
| $12,000 | $144,000 | 61 percent |
| $18,000 | $216,000 | 91 percent |
| Full-time at the BLS median plus the 30.0 percent benefits share | $237,957 | 100 percent |
Where a fractional CFO retainer stops paying for itself
A retainer is cheaper by the month because it buys fewer hours, not because the hour is cheaper. At the median, the full-time seat costs $237,957 for a 40-hour week over 52 weeks, 2,080 hours, or about $114 an hour. That is below every published fractional rate. So the real question is how many hours of CFO work the business needs each month.
Divide the full-time cost by the hourly rate. At Zeni's $300 figure, $237,957 divided by $300 is 793 hours a year, or about 66 hours a month. At Eightx's $150 low end the crossover is about 132 hours a month, and at its $500 top end it is about 40.
A business that needs 15 to 25 hours a month, the load Zeni describes for an early-stage company, sits well inside the range where fractional costs less. A business that needs a CFO three days a week, about 100 hours a month, has crossed the line at any hourly rate above $198. A rolling 13-week cash flow forecast is a good example of recurring work to count when you estimate those hours.
The BLS median covers controllers, treasurers and credit, cash, risk and insurance managers, a wider group than CFOs. A CFO hire for a mid-sized company can price above it. The full-time figure also carries no recruiting fee, bonus or equity. On the fractional side, Eightx and Zeni both describe retainers built on 15 to 25 hours a month. Ask what hours a quote includes before you compare it with anything.
What moves the price inside the range
The vendor pages agree on what pushes a quote toward the top of a range. Each point below names the page it comes from.
- Revenue stage: Eightx's table steps from $3,000 to $5,000 under $5 million to $10,000 to $15,000 between $30 million and $75 million.
- Scope: Fractionus puts reporting oversight and cash flow management at the low end, and fundraising, M&A and multi-entity structures at the high end.
- A transaction or fast growth: Preferred CFO says costs run higher for companies in high growth, preparing for a transaction, or reorganizing their systems.
- Experience: Eightx prices 5 to 10 years at $150 to $250 an hour and 15 or more years with a specialty at $350 to $500.
- Projects billed apart from the retainer: Eightx lists financial modeling at $10,000 to $25,000 and fundraising support at $5,000 to $20,000.
- A floor, in Preferred CFO's opinion: services under $3,000 a month usually point to an inexperienced CFO or to someone who is not a CFO at all.
When a proposal lands, it helps to read it against the table rather than against the headline fee. Find the hours it includes, since Pilot says the price depends on the scope of work you mutually agree on. Separate the retainer from any project fee, because Eightx prices modeling and fundraising support apart from the monthly figure. Then divide the fee by the hours to get the rate you are really paying. Compare that with the $114 an hour of the full-time seat at the median.
Across five vendor pages read on November 4, 2026, a fractional CFO runs $3,000 to $18,000 a month, with most typical bands between $5,000 and $10,000. The full-time seat, built from the BLS median wage and the BLS benefits share, is about $19,800 a month. The retainer is the cheaper option until the business needs roughly 66 hours of CFO time a month at a $300 rate. After that, each hour costs more than a hire at the median.
Every price in this article is the vendor's own published figure on the date it was read, not a quote, and vendors change their pages without notice. SMAART Advisors does not publish a rate; the Fractional CFO service page says a fixed fee quote follows a free consultation. Before you commit to any retainer or hire, confirm the scope, the hours and the numbers with your CPA or advisor.

Published ranges read on November 4, 2026 run from $3,000 to $12,000 a month at Pilot and Eightx. Preferred CFO lists $3,000 to $10,000, Zeni $5,000 to $8,000 and Fractionus $8,000 to $18,000. Each figure is that vendor's own published range, not a quote, and the scope of work decides where a business lands inside it.
Zeni's guide puts the hourly rate at around $300 and assumes 15 to 25 hours a month for an early-stage company. Eightx's 2026 guide gives $150 to $500 an hour and ties the rate to experience. It lists $150 to $250 for 5 to 10 years and $350 to $500 for 15 years or more with a specialty. Both pages were read on November 4, 2026.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the May 2025 median wage for financial managers at $166,570. With benefits at 30.0 percent of private-industry compensation in the BLS June 2026 release, the seat costs about $238,000 a year, or about $19,800 a month. A $12,000 retainer is about 61 percent of that; a $5,000 retainer is about 25 percent.
Divide the full-time cost by the hourly rate. At the BLS-based $237,957 a year and a $300 hourly rate, the crossover is about 793 hours a year, or about 66 hours a month. A business that needs more CFO time than that is paying more per hour for a fractional CFO than for a full-time hire at the median.
Scope follows size. Eightx's 2026 stage table lists $3,000 to $5,000 a month under $5 million in revenue and $5,000 to $10,000 from $5 million to $30 million. From $30 million to $75 million it lists $10,000 to $15,000. Fractionus ties its $8,000 to $18,000 range to scope, with fundraising, M&A and multi-entity work at the top.
